SS-31 is one of the more clinically advanced compounds in this library, with a
genuine pharmaceutical development program behind it.

Chemical identity & structure.
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide — four amino acids — also known by the generic
name elamipretide (and historically by other code names). Its structure
includes an alternating aromatic-cationic motif that gives it a distinctive
property: it concentrates in mitochondria.

Mechanism of action.
SS-31's defining mechanism is that it targets the inner mitochondrial membrane
and binds cardiolipin, a lipid unique to that membrane and essential for the
proper function of the electron transport chain. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31
is reported to help preserve mitochondrial structure and improve the efficiency
of cellular energy production while reducing damaging reactive oxygen species.
This is a relatively well-defined mechanism compared with many compounds here.

Key research findings.
SS-31/elamipretide has been studied in primary mitochondrial diseases, in heart
failure, and in other conditions where mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated.
The clinical research has had mixed results across indications — some endpoints
were met and others were not — which is typical of a difficult therapeutic area.

The research / citation base.
Elamipretide has been the subject of a real pharmaceutical clinical-development
program, including controlled human trials. It is **not (as of this writing) an
approved drug**, and its trial record is mixed rather than uniformly positive.
Still, it has one of the more substantial human evidence bases of any compound
in this library.

Research protocols in the literature.
Clinical trials have used subcutaneous administration. Research-grade material
is a lyophilized powder for reconstitution.

Quality & sourcing notes.
A batch-specific COA with mass-spectrometry identity and HPLC purity is the
minimum bar. SS-31 is sold under several names (SS-31, elamipretide, older code
names) — confirm the COA describes the same molecule.

*Research-use note: Educational summary of published research. Elamipretide is an
investigational compound and is not approved; this is research context only and
not medical advice.*
